ABOUT ZOANTHID CORAL

Zoanthus and Palythoa are among the most diverse and colorful corals in the reef hobby. Their wide range of patterns makes them favorites for beginners and collectors alike. Both are relatively easy to care for, tolerating various lighting and water conditions. Once established, zoas grow and spread quickly.

Lighting Requirements for Zoanthid Coral (Zoas)

Zoas are incredibly adaptable and can thrive in a wide range of lighting conditions, which makes them perfect for both beginners and seasoned reefers.

• Ideal PAR Range:
  50–150 PAR
  
  

• 50–100 PAR: Great for most zoa varieties, especially in lower or shaded areas.
  
  

• 100–150 PAR: Helps bring out more vivid coloration and can encourage faster growth in many morphs.
  
  

• Spectrum:
  
  

• Zoas respond well to blue-dominant light (400–470nm) which enhances their fluorescence and color pop.
  
  

• A balanced full-spectrum light with strong blues is ideal.
  
  

• Lighting Type:
  
  

• Compatible with LEDs, T5HO, or metal halide setups.
  
  

• Just be sure to acclimate them slowly if increasing intensity.
  
  

• Placement Tips:
  
  

• Can be placed from the bottom to mid-levels of the tank depending on light strength.
  
  

• Too much light can cause fading or “melting,” so monitor their response and adjust as needed.
  
  

Water Flow Requirements for Zoanthid Coral (Zoas)

Zoas do best in moderate, indirect water flow that keeps debris off their surface while allowing them to open fully and thrive.

• Moderate, indirect flow is ideal.
  
  

• Too little flow can lead to detritus buildup and algae growth; too much can cause them to stay closed or detach.
  
  

• Why It Matters:
  Steady flow helps with nutrient exchange, prevents film or debris buildup, and keeps the polyps clean—especially in dense colonies.
  
  

• Placement Tips:
  
  

• Position them in areas where they get a gentle, swaying current, but not in the direct path of a powerhead.
  
  

• Zoas are very adaptable, so you can fine-tune their placement based on how open and healthy they appear.
