ABOUT FUNGIA PLATE CORAL
Fungia Plate corals are unique among LPS corals because they can move and relocate themselves. This is why they should always be placed on the substrate—if placed on the rockwork, they’ll likely jump off!
Lighting Requirements for Fungia Plate Coral
Fungia Plate corals prefer moderate lighting. They can adapt to a range of light conditions but thrive under bright, yet not overwhelming, light.
-
Ideal PAR Range:
100–250 PAR -
100–150 PAR: Best for shaded or deeper tank areas.
-
150–250 PAR: Ideal for vibrant growth and color enhancement in areas with more light.
-
Spectrum:
-
A blue-dominant spectrum (420–470nm) enhances the coral’s colors and encourages healthy growth.
-
Full-spectrum light is also suitable, as long as it's not too intense for the coral.
-
Lighting Type:
-
Fungia Plate corals do well under LEDs, T5HO, or metal halides, but intensity should be adjusted based on your tank’s depth and light availability.
-
Placement Tips:
-
Position them in mid to lower sections of the tank, where light intensity is moderate but not excessive.
Water Flow Requirements for Fungia Plate Coral
Fungia Plate corals thrive in gentle to moderate, indirect flow. They are more tolerant of lower flow conditions compared to other LPS corals but still need some movement for optimal health.
-
Flow Type:
-
Gentle to moderate, random flow is best.
-
Avoid high, direct flow, which can cause the coral to retract or become stressed.
-
Why It Matters:
A gentle, consistent flow helps with nutrient delivery and waste removal, while preventing detritus from settling on the coral’s surface. Too strong a current may damage the coral's tissue or cause it to move uncontrollably. -
Placement Tips:
-
Place the Fungia Plate coral on the substrate in areas with mild, gentle water movement.
-
Avoid placing them near strong powerheads or wave makers, as they can get disturbed or detached.
