About this coral
You are buying the exact coral in the photo: one branching hammer polyp. Under blue spectrum reef lighting each hammer-shaped tentacle tip is purple, and the neon green stalks below are covered in dark purple splatter marks. That two-tone color with the speckling is what makes it a bicolor splatter. Conditioned in our Key West systems.
About Branching Hammer (Euphyllia paraancora)
Branching hammer grows on a branching skeleton, and every branch carries its own head of hammer-shaped tentacles. That sets it apart from wall hammer, which grows as one continuous wall. Taxonomists have since moved it to the genus Fimbriaphyllia, but most reefers still know it as Euphyllia. Over time a single head splits into new branches and can grow into a full colony. Splatter patterns vary from piece to piece, so no two look alike.
Care Guide
Moderate care. Branching hammers do best with steady water, medium light and room to open up.
- Lighting: Medium — PAR 100–200. Too much light can make the tentacles pull in.
- Flow: Medium — steady, indirect flow so the tentacles sway without folding over.
- Placement: Mid rockwork or the sandbed, with open space on every side.
- Feeding: Medium — it gets most of what it needs from light. Small meaty foods like mysis help it grow faster.
- Aggression: High — its sweeper tentacles come out at night and can sting nearby corals. Give it at least 6″ of space.
- Water Parameters: Temp 76–78°F, salinity 1.025–1.026, Alk 8–9 dKH, Ca 420–440, Mg 1300–1400. Stability matters more than exact numbers.
