About this coral
You are buying the exact coral in the photo: a 5″ Acan Bowerbanki colony, photographed under blue spectrum reef lighting. The body is hot pink to red and covered in small bumps tipped in electric blue-green. Several deep blue mouths share the one body, and a few have green inside. From above it reads as a single sheet of color. It is conditioned in our Key West systems.
About Acan Bowerbanki (Acanthastrea bowerbanki)
Acan Bowerbanki is a large-polyp stony coral from the Indo-Pacific. It grows as a fleshy mound, and the surface is covered in small raised bumps, which is where the textured look comes from. A colony this size has several mouths on one skeleton, so it works as a centerpiece for a low-light spot, not a frag you tuck into a corner.
Acans do not need much light, and they punish too much of it. Under SPS-level light the tissue pulls back and the color fades. Keep it low in the tank, give it gentle flow, and feed it. A well-fed acan holds its color and adds tissue.
Expect it to look deflated when it arrives. Acans often do after a night in a box. Give it a few days in low light and gentle flow before you judge it.
Care Guide
This coral does well in a stable tank with low light and regular feeding.
- Lighting: Low to medium, PAR 50-150. Keep it low. Acans burn under SPS lighting.
- Flow: Low to moderate. Enough to keep detritus off the tissue, not enough to push it around.
- Placement: Sand bed or lower rockwork.
- Feeding: High. Target-feed meaty foods such as mysis or chopped seafood.
- Aggression: Semi-aggressive. Sweeper tentacles come out at night, so leave space around it.
- Water Parameters: Temp 76-78°F, salinity 1.025-1.026, Alk 8-9 dKH, Ca 420-440, Mg 1300-1400. Stability matters more than exact numbers.
