Micromussa corals (often still labeled “Acans” after their former placement in the Acanthastrea genus) grow as low, encrusting mats of thick, cushion-like polyps ringed in vivid reds, oranges, greens, and blues. They favor the gentler half of the reef—moderate light, gentle flow—and reward stable conditions with steady, though slower, growth. These LPS corals are a great choice for all reefers—hardy enough for beginners, yet available in a wide range of color morphs that keep experienced collectors hunting for the next piece. Micromussa shares visual similarities with true Acans and Blastomussa, so identification can be tricky: M. lordhowensis sports noticeably larger polyps than M. amakusensis, and compared with Acanthastrea echinata the polyps appear much more inflated.

While Micromussa can meet much of its energy needs from photosynthesis, regular target feeding of small meaty foods such as mysis, brine shrimp, or reef-safe pellets accelerates growth and enhances coloration.

Can Micromussa touch other corals?

Micromussa are known to show aggression and for using their sweeper tentacles against nearby corals. Give adequate (at least 2–3 in. / 5–8 cm) clearance from neighbors to prevent neighbors from getting stung.

Why is my Micromussa receding?

Common causes are excessive light or flow, unstable alkalinity, or harassment by pest organisms (e.g., Acropora-eating flatworms, Amphipods). Check parameters, lower the light intensity it is under, and inspect for pests.
